Writing contest deadline is extended to August 31!


August 25 Bonnie West  West will talk about her book, Boyfriends, an anthology of short stories, recently released in paperback, and share her tips on how to get your short stories published.

West’s stories and essays have appeared in numerous publications, including The Minetta Review, The Talking Stick, Women’s Day, Redbook Magazine, The Austin Chronicle, and the anthologies, Still Going Strong and The Ultimate Dog Lover.

She has four mini-mysteries for children published by Carol Rhoda Press and a bilingual Japanese/English book, Hideki and Kenji Save the Day published in collaboration with Diane Carter.

She was a finalist in both the Essay and Novel-in-progress categories of The William Faulkner – William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition. She lives with her husband in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Boyfriends is her debut collection, published by Ink Tears, a U.K. press, celebrating the short story.

June 2018 Brainerd Writers Alliance News and Conference/Contest Updates

  • Beginning in July we will meet in the large meeting room at the Brainerd library unless the room is unavailable. Please check the website/your email for changes in location.
  • New member Charlie Johnson is also a member of the Focal Point Photography Club. The club will be posting photos on their website for writers to select from and write an accompanying piece for an exhibit at the Crossing Arts Alliance. Details are forthcoming.

June 23 – Susan Smith-Grier  Absent Narratives: Can You Hear Me Now?

Sue will talk about voices that are missing in the Minnesota literary world. Finding those absent narratives and listening to the stories they tell can enrich your life and broaden your horizons. It also opens a dialog for a better understanding of one another.

Sue Smith-Grier is a local writer, copywriter, and contributor to the book, Blues Vision: African American Writing from American Writers in Minnesota, available from Amazon.

Grier is a two-time winner of Poetry on the Wall People’s Choice Award sponsored by the Crossing Arts Alliance. She is a member of Brainerd Writers Alliance.

Spread the word to your writer friends to attend our annual conference and book fair: The location is yet to be determined but it will be in one of the new downtown Brainerd conference spaces soon to open. Posters will be available when we determine the location.

Registration for conference and book fair opens June 1. Seating is limited.

Attention MINNESOTA WRITERS. 

You are invited to enter the 2018 BWA writing contest. Submit your best original work. Open for submissions, June 18, 2018. Details and guidelines. This year entries can be paid for online and submissions emailed per guidelines. Entries submitted before payment/June 18, will be ineligible.

Fellow writers of all ages—aspiring and accomplished—are invited to join Brainerd Writers Alliance. Membership is $15 per year and includes discounts on our events and classes.
