Last Saturday, May 18th, 2019, was a historic day for the Brainerd Writers Alliance!
In April, we decided unanimously to transform our writing group/club into an official 501c3 nonprofit group geared toward encouraging and supporting all of our Lakes Area writers. We have writers, both published and unpublished, all across our region and we’re here to support them all. In order to do this, we decided to take the next step in our journey and luckily, we have a member who is well-versed in traversing the legal documents required to take on this task (thank you, Kim!).
This month, we voted in our founding Board Members who will lead us for the next two years toward this new endeavor.
Meet the New Lakes Area Writers Alliance 2019-2021 New Board!
Board President – Carissa Andrews
Board Vice-President – Cara Norquist Lanz
Secretary/Treasurer – Beverly Hamilton Abear
Education Director – Kimberly Clement
Membership/Communications Director – Becky Flansburg
As you may have already noticed, voting in our board isn’t the only thing we did at this past meeting. We’ve also taken on a new name to represent the greater initiative! Over the next few months, you’ll start to see less of Brainerd Writers Alliance and more of LAKES AREA Writers Alliance! Our Facebook Page and Instagram Page have already started this transformation and the website’s update will be coming next.
The final change coming with this transition will be our monthly meeting location. While we absolutely adore the Brainerd Public Library, it’s proven too small for our needs. Starting with our June 15th meeting, we will now be meeting in the activity room of Bethany Good Samaritan (804 Wright Street)–yes, we giggled at the play on “write,” too. It’s serendipitous, what can we say?
This change does not affect our 2019 Writing Contest or Conference in any way. We are still offering both and hope you’ll join us in sharing your literary and creative writing talents by submitting and joining us this fall.
Stay tuned! We are all excited about this new step toward expanding our literary offerings in the Lakes Area!
