We’re announcing our 2016 Judges and featured speaker for the BWA writing contest and Fall Festival. Details on the contest, festival and writing contest guidelines are on our 2016 Writing Contest and Fall Festival page. Remember to enter before August 24!

We encourage writers of all ages to enter the contest. 


Fiction – Theresa Jarvela has published three novels through North Star Press and lives in the Brainerd area.
Creative Nonfiction – Meg Douglas is writer and editor of ‘Her Voice Magazine’ and lives in the Brainerd area.
Poetry – LouAnn Muhm is a writer and teacher from northern Minnesota.  Her chapbook, “Dear Immovable,” was published in 2006 by Pudding House Press, and her full-length poetry collection “Breaking the Glass” ( 2008, Loonfeather Press) was a finalist for the Midwest Book Awards.

Festival Speaker: Angela F. Foster 

Angela teaches memoir at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, MN, and throughout Minnesota. She served as co-editor of “County Lines: 87 Minnesota Counties, 130 Minnesota Poets,” published by Loon Feather Press (2008) and holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Nonfiction from Pine Manor College in Boston, MA.  “Farm Girls,” a book of poetry and essays written with her sister Candace Simar, was released in January 2013 from RiverPlace Press of Brainerd, Minnesota.  For more information, please visit her website.

ATTEND BWA FALL WRITERS FESTIVAL, October 29th at the Northland Arboretum. All winners are invited to read their entries.

Lakes Area Writers Alliance is a writers group in Brainerd, Minnesota that offers support, encouragement, and critique to members and visitors to their monthly meetings.
